GII. Why did you choose Golf Course Superintendent as a career?

USS.  I love nature and horticulture from the bottom of my heart. When I started working, DLF Golf & Country Club was my first job place. It was a fantastic experience for me to work for beautification of Golf course and maintenance of Turf. Then I realized I had a job where my hobby may become my profession. So I choose GCS as a career.

GII. What type of ‘on the job training’ have you had in the field

USS. I have attended seminars of Dr Micah Woods organized by IGU, GIA and GCSMAI. Regarding “On job training” I must give credits to DLF Golf & Country Club for 1 year special training.

GII. What type of education, classes, seminars, or other training you have in the field of Turf Grass management?

USS. I have done my Bachelors in Agricultural Science from Pantnagar University and then joined DLF Golf & Country Club where I had completed 1 year training program under experienced team. Also I attended various Turf Management seminars organized by GIA and GCSMAI.

GII. Describe the different challenges you face as a Golf Course Superintendent. What seems to be the biggest challenge for you and why?

USS. Challenges are of various types like irrigation water shortage in Hyderabad, Soil & water salinity in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Fortunately I have worked in different area with these issues and find out desired solution locally. The biggest challenge for me was to work for Boulder Hills Golf Course, Hyderabad with the minimum water use, hardly we could irrigate Greens and Tees during peak summers. The summer was supposed to start from January till June (before Monsoon starts) was the biggest challenge for me. Secondly control of local weeds (Digitaria, Motha, Crabgrass, Nutgrass, etc) at Jaypee Greens, Greater Noida with the use of Chemicals is equally difficult job for me.

GII. What would you do to further your knowledge of proper Course Maintenance?

USS. I would like to attend more seminars and workshops. I also keep discussing maintenance issues with my seniors who are working in different Golf Courses. I am a member of GCSMAI which conducts various seminars, expo and webinars to keep updated with current affairs and inputs.

GII. How are challenging situations handled involving Golfers who have concerns or complaints regarding the tee marker and Cup locations?

USS. There is a science behind Tee markers and Cup location change, It allows using maximum Tee and Green area and providing time for better Turf recovery. Nowadays members know these issues very well and co-operate with GCS.

GII. What is your opinion of Golf Courses in relation to the Environment?

USS.  Golf Courses are very important in respect to increase biodiversity, flora and fauna, protect local water bodies and creation of artificial lakes, multiplication of local cultivar of plants and trees, protection of soil from erosion and degradation, enhancement of aesthetics by landscaping and flowers, provide shelters for birds and animals.

GII. If your course uses effluent water, what process is used to prepare it for use on the course?

USS.  We don’t use effluent water for irrigation.

GII. What have been the most rewarding aspects of your profession?

USS. I love nature and my hobby is Horticulture & Landscaping. And when your hobby becomes your profession that gives the feeling of most rewarding person on the earth.

GII. Knowing what you do now, if you had a chance to start your career over, would you again choose the Golf Course Superintendent? If yes, why?

USS. Yes for sure. Because now my hobby has become my profession.

GII. Best practice which you would like to share with other Golf Courses Superintendents.

USS. Plan well before doing and work as per plan. Team building, create leaders under your team and give them responsibility for better results. I think team work is much more important than working alone.
